West Bar Vets: Veterinary hospital enhances its imaging quality with SFS

The Challenge:

West Bar Veterinary Hospital Ltd (West Bar Vets) has invested in new imaging equipment with the help of Siemens Financial Services (SFS). West Bar Vets is a mixed practice veterinary hospital based in Banbury. Now a ten-vet practice with four consulting branches and providing 24hour care, West Bar Vets can trace its origins to the 1880s when it operated as a blacksmith’s shoeing forge.

The practice wanted to replace its ageing veterinary ultrasound machine to improve clinical efficiency and image quality. As a relatively small business, West Bar Vets needed a solution that would protect its capital reserves while enabling the business to stay ahead of the technological curve.

Richard Byrne BVetMed MRCVS, Director and Partner at West Bar Vets explains, “We wanted to upgrade our current ultrasound and looked carefully at a number of systems on the market. We even trialled another machine but ultimately the technology from Siemens Healthineers offered us the best value for money.

The Solution:

After looking at several competitors’ options and testing an upgrade to its current system, West Bar Vets worked with PLH Medical to acquire the Siemens Healthineers ACUSON P500 Ultrasound Solution.

  • The system offers technological advantages to others on the market including increased processing speed and enhanced image quality with exclusive motion correction.
  • Additionally, the ultrasound system is compact and portable and, once installed, it was easy for the practice to wirelessly link the system to its picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

The Benefits:

  • Siemens experience team of ultrasonographers were able to understand the practice’s needs and demonstrate the system’s capabilities in a live simulation.
  • SFS tailored the finance solution to enable it to take advantage of an after sales service five year warranty to ensure peace of mind and a competitive rate.
  • The process of arranging finance for the acquisition was easy and straightforward and the team ensured the arrangement was made in time for West Bar Vets to claim the VAT immediately after the transaction.

Richard Byrne BVetMed MRCVS, Director and Partner at West Bar Vets added, “When purchasing very technical veterinary equipment like radiology or ultrasound, you can easily pay a lot of money for something that is already old. The pace of change is so fast that you have to be vigilant to stay ahead of the curve. We’re really happy with the new system.

Sally-Anne Whybrow of Healthcare Finance for Siemens Financial Services in the UK adds, “It was a pleasure working with West Bar Vets to provide the best possible solution for their practice. An ultrasound is a key piece of diagnostic equipment and this system will make a significant difference for the many pets and their owners that visit the hospital.

When was your last Digital Processor or X-ray Service?

Your digital processor and x-ray service should always be in line with the manufacturers’ guidelines by a manufacturer-trained engineer. Your digital processor and X-ray equipment are an integral piece of kit. This also means that they need to be included in your annual maintenance and testing schedule that you should have in place.

Take care of your investment

A patient’s health is undoubtedly priceless, but it’s no secret that your X-ray machines and digital processing equipment are a very important and a key investment within your practice. Therefore, it is important to take care of your diagnostic imaging equipment by having it serviced regularly. At the very least an annual service is capable of extending the lifetime of your equipment, which means less time worrying about downtime or replacement.

Preventing the bigger issues

By requesting an annual service from PLH Medical, it allows our qualified engineers to spot potential issues before they develop into bigger and more expensive ones. Our engineers can offer advice and provide on-site assistance and even remote support.

Keeping your equipment clean is fundamental to any practice, but how clean is your equipment on the inside? Our engineers can run full diagnostics circuit boards to ensure everything is working and calibrated fully. Much like a computer, X-ray and processing equipment contain fans that help keep the internal components cool. Unfortunately, fans don’t fair very well against loose dust that can often become trapped which can easily block a fan and prevent it from functioning correctly. Circuit boards are undoubtedly very pricey, a quick clean can help prevent this easily avoidable expense.

before & After X Ray machine Image

Are you up-to-date?

An annual digital processor or X-ray service by PLH Medical allows our engineers to update your equipment’s software. This can help prevent bugs in the system or provide necessary upgrades recommended by manufacturers.

Speed up your system

Over time your system can become clogged up with information and files. This can cause spontaneous crashing and can drastically slow down the equipment. For X-Ray equipment that is connected to the internet, our remote engineers can securely login and also clean up your X-Ray system. This can be performed quickly and without the need for an on-site visit. Furthermore, our PLH Medical engineers can also clean and update software, check error logs as well as view how much memory your equipment has remaining.

When was your last service?

Can you remember the last time your equipment received an annual service? Or did you wait until a problem arose before seeking advice? Has your equipment broken down in the past? Were you forced to turn customers away or even had a patient waiting for treatment?

Nevertheless, PLH Medical strongly recommend servicing your equipment annually. Updating software, checking and cleaning equipment internals, are just some of the reasons why an annual service can prevent an inconvenient and expensive breakdown at the worst possible moment.

Is your current service contract covering your practice’s needs?

With a variety of different contracts available. We are confident that we will have a tailored plan that suits all your needs and specific budget.

Agfa Health Care Direct Digital

The new lightweight Agfa Equine DR solution combines the new DX-D 45 Digital Detector with Automatic Exposure Detection (AED). The DX-D 45 Digital Detector with Automatic Exposure Detection (AED) also offers a fast and effective way for radiography facilities. This allows you to benefit from high-quality digital imaging when using any X-ray equipment.

  • The easiest and most versatile way to go Direct Digital.
  • High resolution, light-weight and small cassette-sized detector offer optimal convenience and portability.
  • Automatic Exposure Detection (AED) allows seamless use with virtually all X-ray systems, maximizing the use of the existing X-ray equipment.
  • Improved workflow and examination speed.
  • MUSICA processing for excellent contrast detail and exam-independent, consistent image quality.

Faster and more efficient workflow.

The DX-D 45 is an integral part of an Agfa HealthCare Instant DR solution. This is because the DX-D 45 includes the NX image acquisition software with MUSICA processing and detector. Most of all, these cassette-less and filmless solutions provide a range of workflow benefits that improve productivity and speed up exam time. Furthermore, retakes can be made faster without changing cassettes. To complete the workflow, images can also be sent faster to a PACS or imager in DICOM format.

MUSICA Image Processing.

In addition, Agfa’s dedicated solutions for vets include their proprietary MUSICA imaging processing and also their popular NX workstation. Together these solutions are able to provide high-resolution scanning with unparalleled image quality. This could also be due to its ability to automatically analyses the characteristics of each raw image and optimising the processing parameters, independent of body part or dose deviation. This means there is no need for technical expertise. You get maximum detail, with minimum fuss.
